It's 2 am and I am a happy camper. This happened after I uninstalled some old programs to try and improve performance. Couldn't have happened at a worse time. I'm a CPA and April 15 is next week. I'll be making a donation! God Bless!

I have no idea why my computer suddenly wouldn't boot up; I hadn't changed anything. But your solution worked!! All the other 'help' pages were gobbledegook to me, but yours walked me through everything very clearly.

Thank you so much! I would have lost 3 days work if it hadn't been for you!

You saved my ass, and i thank you for that.

Miles,

"NTLDR is missing" is one of the most frustrating errors a computer user can experience. Your solution not only worked, but your instructions were presented in a clear, concise manner that kept me from experiencing the stress of searching everywhere online for the correct answer. You have my most sincere thanks and respect.

Thank you Miles. The message occurred when uninstalling program files. Fortunately I did have a 2nd computer to search the net for a solution. Regards, Leon

YOU ARE THE MAN!!! It worked like a charm!! I had a Power outage in my neighborhood and when it came back, I was getting the NTLDR error! Freaked out I Googled it and found your site. Using a Windows 7 Laptop I was able to make a cd-rom and using my external hard drive was able to bring up Windows and your instructions to copy and paste the files from the disc worked perfectly!!! I can't thank you enough!!!!

Ok, here's one .I decided to add a spare 200gb hardrive, which had to be faulty(intermittently knocking), hence must have become spare from a while ago. Anyhow,my pc did work until the HD decided to overheat and then corrupt. I then removed it, re-booted and voila!, I got NTLDR is missing. Copied the files across to the system drive, and still to no avail. Followed the ntldr.exe(menus 1 to 10) , and still not working. Daft as it may sound,I looked into the bios, (6 HD's to choose from!), and found that the boot order was incorrect, and the system was trying to boot from a storage drive and not the system drive. Lesson learnt, check teh simple things in life before trying to strip every thing down...

Thank you so much for your help and knowledge. i wasted days trying to find a solution until i found your solution, worked without complications. Once again, thank you. God bless you :)

WORKED LIKE A CHARM!!
I have no CD drive and no floppy, so I was stuck--I will definitely be making a donation!

Thanks for posting this!

Used the fix and it worked great.

I did a complete reload on a Compaq with Windows XP from a Microsoft CD. I did not blast the recovery partition before starting. I didn't want that partition to be part of my Ghost image because it was 5 Gb, so I deleted it. That's when I got the error.

A full build for me takes about 4 hours. It was well worth the small donation to not have to do that again. I hope you can enjoy a beer on me. Thanks.

Awesome, worked like a charm!! Cheers so much for this fix!

My son called me with the news that the computer would do nothing but display an "NTLDR is missing" message. I tried to give him instructions over the phone, like Robert Stack in "Airplane." Got home, realized the problem is serious. Luckily, I found your site on my Blackberry, followed the instructions and...civilization has returned! Thanks you so much. Couple of suggestions: for Dummies (like yours truly) you could explain how to find the appropriate files for copying from the cd drive to the c drive (I just used the search function, but I was thrown at first when I didn't see the files on the menu). Also, the last instruction, the final instruction, the driving of the golden spike instruction, was different on my machine. I had to go system-advanced-start up and recovery. Just a different set of menus, but again, I was worried that I'd get oh-so-close to the goal and fall short. Anyway, the story ends happily thanks to you, and I'm very grateful!

Thank you for the very clear instructions. I followed them to the "T." The only problem I had with making the bootable USB drive is that once it's in the bootable state. I'm unable to paste any additional files in it as the instructions require. Please help. :(

m said...

@anonymous Regarding changing the boot files in the usb drive; if you want to change the boot files, change the files in the "dos system files" folder when using the "HPUSBFW.EXE" file to format the USB stick;

if you need more help, just repost a comment to this blog, or tweet me @ntldrismissing

Super stuff from you. All other methods were too tricky and risky. But recovering the windows in such a simple way is amazing. Deleted some stuff(hidden system files) from c drive(will nvr do it again) and faced this problem. Was thinking of contacting some technical guy for this job. but your work made it easy for me. Thanks a lot!

THANX FOR SAVING MY NETBOOK! I accidently compressed my ntldr file and got the error (bootmgr is compressed). I used a usb drive with your files and it worked! At first i had trouble finding the usb drive letter to type in (a:\>bootpart winnt boot:b:). After i got in i uncompressed ntldr and three other files next to it and now it works fine. THANX AGAIN!

I just want to say thanks so much!! My C drive was filling up with a bunch of crap, honestly, I was so frustrated and just deleted all these files except for the program fodlers and what not but I guess I deleted the nt and boot files. Anyways, I can not afford to lose this PC yet, even though it's many years old. You see, I am in the process of sponsoring my wife to come to Canada and I haven't been able to print out our emails, IM chat logs and pictures.

So when I couldn't get into my PC, I started freaking out! I am definitely going to get this stuff done so I don't freak out like this again. I don't have any means at the moment to make a donation but when I do, just know that it was me that made the big one!

Seriously rocking solutions, sir!
Brand new install for customer with massive viruses, and the bios cannot find the boot sector without your solution 1! Some kind of sata/ide goofup? I don't know, I have tried most everything, but will try some of your suggestions. Found your solution on a certain well known boot-tools disc, and wanted just your tool, as a permanent solution to the customer's machine that would be fairly painless for a noob. Solution: small bootable usb drive permanently installed!!

donation sent!!

STILL WORKING ! ! ! Hard to believe your solution is still working after all these years. Miles, you are the MAN! Thanks for sharing your efforts with the world. missing NTLDR was a bitch to solve without an install disc and I was close to wiping my hard drive and installing an OS of questionable origin before finding your work on tinyempire.com. If only I had $$; I'd gladly donate to your cause. Excellent!

I am a babe in the woods when it comes to computer tech but was able to reboot my machine (TWO actually) with success! First thanks a lot, sorry can't help financially) Just a small experience sharing. I first tried to do the stuff with a 8GB usb and chose the FAT option, it gave an error that the USB is too large, so next I just changed to FAT32 and it worked perfectly!
