Thank you so much Miles. Donation sent as requested.

It's been a fun morning, the keyboard on the laptop was faulty so couldn't get into BIOS, therefore added a USB keyboard, once I was in, the comp refused to boot from the USB, I couldn't use the CD solution because my emergency computer was WIN2000 and the ISO burner doesn't have a WIN2000 version (any chance you could recommend an ISO burner for WIN2000 for others in my position) eventually I found another great program BART PE which is a bare bones operating system on CD and used it to copy the files from the USB to the root folder, your explanation for editing the boot.ini file was clear and once I'd got into the computer using Bart, i was able to see the folder was WINXPPRO, changed the boot.ini file, saved it direct into the root folder along with NTLDR and NTLDETECT.COM, restarted and option 3 was the charm. I've now edited the boot.ini to use option 3 as default and the laptop starts like normal. All of this from a computer NEWB, just proves how good your explanation is. Many thanks again.

It did work !! wow !! My son's PC would not boot to a Vista install CD because the NTLDR was missing, I am installing a fresh copy of Vista. He has an AMD socket 939 on an ASUS board. I think that is why I couldn't use only the Vista install CD, it's AMI BIOS...I think.... I installed a fresh copy of Vista on my PC about 6 months ago and did not need a bootable floppy nor did I have the NTLDR is missing problem. Thanks again.

Just to say thanks a lot for the help, my sons laptop was unuseable because he had deleted the ntldr file by mistake and as it had no cd, dvd or floppy drive I was unable to use the recovery DVD nthat came with it and I was a bit stumped as to how to fix it, The usb version of your application worked great on the 2nd attempt and I was able to replace the missing files and get the laptop working just fine again.

I can confirm to any1 and every1 that the downloads are what they say they are and do the job they are supposed to. A lot of people probably end up paying a lot of money to PC repair men to fix this problem when there is an easy to use solution freely available to any1 able to use a search engine.

Miles.. I wanted to take a moment to thank you for your article on how to fix your computer when yiu get the NTLDR message and the computer will not boot up!

For no reason that I am aware of this happened to me on Friday morning! We spent all day asking our frineds that are in the computer business... what to do.. we tried everything with no success.

I then went on my hubbys computer.. and googled everthing I could find.. till I found your site!

I did what you said about making the cd..etc... then my husband took over... and tried it to no avail... the screen never came up with the choices, and after 8 hours he gave up!

I sat down.. with the cd in.. and as it booted .. I just kept hitting F lock and F12.. welllaaa! the screen came up! I told it to boot from the cd.. it did.. then I hit the TRY THIS one FIRST.. and my puter totally booted up!

I immediately backed up my entire hard drive to my Maxtor external hard drive.

Each time I rebooted.. I had to go thru the steps above.. but that was ok with me! I for now had my puter back!

Well. when I went to bed last night.. all night I kept waking up thinking.. " there must something I am missing or did not do". So when I got up this morning we went back to your site.. and I read further down.. to where it said to copy those files into the C: drive.. I did that.. rebooted without the disk, and it now boots beautifully!

I want to thank you for taking the time to write that article or blog... on how to resolve my issue as well as many other peoples.

My hubby and his friend are going to put a new hd into my puter today.. and make my old hard drive... this one I am using that had the error.... the SLAVE.. so that I can still access my things.

Do you have any clue what would have caused that Ntldr error in the first place?

Again I really appreciate your help in helping me to get my puter up and running... Have a great day! Jo-Anna

Your tools made it possible for me to boot my XP and restore a stable version of Vista back to c: using Acronis.
Thank you very much for your tools mate!

That thing is working like hell. That's what we call intelligent brains at work. How I wish I had known you earlier. I have to bookmark you for future reference.

It took only one minute to fix it. The first option did it. I went straight to the recycle bin and the file ntldr was comfortably resting there. Immediately restored it, restarted the system and the system was good than ever. Somebody must have unintentionally, or sabotage, or whatever, deleted that file, ntldr.

I am in Nairobi, Kenya, and in the meantime I will see what I can do for your good gesture. Surely, I genuinely appreciate the help you have done to me, especially the amount of hours saved, and of course I have a new tool to keep.

Miles;
Thank you.
Even though I know I could recreate what you did - you did it in such a simple package it was great!
(I was using partition commander (not pqmagic or easus - another 1!)to partition an external drive and it forced a reboot - messing up the MBR of the main computer.)
Of course with modern OEM xp installs there was no handy USB boot disk around - so I made one with yours - and then did not even have to manipulate the ini file since you provided the batch file.
I will be forwarding your site to my friends.
Have sent in $25 for your time saving and 'elegant' solution.
Cheers;
Jack.

the steps were very clear but i ran into a problem, I made a Flash Drive boot and it went right to the first screen where you press Y but it did not come up with the list of 10 on restart ,just a blank screen. Would be very thankful for advice

I don't have a good answer for you, perhaps try a different usb stick. (you can also email me and we can try and work on it some more, I can't email you back because I don't have your email address)

Brother if I were not as broke as you I'd send ya more than 5 bucks. I almost paid staple 100 and all I want the old junk for is to run linux on. It did take me 3 days, but i'm a slow learner.

THANK YOU. I tried "Wubi" - which Ubuntu site plugs as "It can install and uninstall Ubuntu in the same way as any other Windows application. It's simple and safe." - simple and safe?? what a LOAD. This Wubi ruined my machine. Your article saved it! Thank you much!

Sad to say it didnt work for me.Every time i restart it asks to press tab to see bios post.If i press tab a page is seen for a very short moment and it reverts back to the page saying press alt+ctrl+del to restart.Even using windows(xp sp3) for repairing had the same result.Any suggestions?

m said...

@Anonymous: If you need to reply back, leave an email, or just email me: milescomer @ gmail . com

You mentioned that you could press Tab but it wouldn't go into the BIOS. Try plugging in a different external keyboard. I have seen problems with wireless keyboards not being able to get into the bios.

You also mentioned you were able to try xp sp3, so perhaps you can boot from CD without having to change the BIOS, perhaps try making the CD-R fix and using it (You didn't say which you were using, but I'm guessing you are trying the usb fix)

It took me some time to get it working, but I managed to boot properly!

Got this message in the middle of the night, not a happy camper, googled on another laptop and found your page. It looked daunting but this morning step by step I did it! The USB didn't work for some reason but the CD was perfect! and I am not a geek.

Err... I'm having problems. After I press Y and reboot, the screen turns to a single blinking cursor at the top left hand corner and nothing else. No options. No 1 to 10. What do I do?

m said...

@Anonymous

I'm not sure why but the blinking cursor means its trying to boot off the usb drive (which is good) but not succeeding (which is bad). I would say:
# Try making it again: http://tinyempire.com/notes/ntldrmoreinfo/usbscreenshots.htm
# Try a different USB drive
# Try the CD solution (if your broken computer has a CD drive)
# Go ahead and move on to the backup solution of pulling the drive, backing up the contents, and reinstalling. Sorry :-(

Hey what should I do if I get the message "Windows has disabled direct disk access to protect your long filenames" after I boot up the flash drive and press Y?
Thanks

I've got one word for you: THANKS!

My dad had completely messed up his computer, and I spent hours getting around this problem - to no avail. But then I came across your site and to my astonishment "3RD TRY THIS" worked as a charm and the computer booted into Windows.

Do you still want donations? I feel like you deserve a Nobel Peace Prize or something.

Cheers from Norway.

m said...

@Magnus I still love to get donations :-) it helps finance the site and pays for my energy drinks; and nothing says "What you did was valuable" more than giving me something that has value to you (money)

You are some sort of god. Your face is the dread visage of an avenging angel, full bathed in the warm glow of righteousness. Your eyes are the purest amber, and your skin makes small children weep nostalgically for better days.

You guessed it, I don't have any money to give you. But as some small token of my appreciation for you, please feel free to print the above paragraph out and display it on your wall, your tshirt, or a large bumper sticker.

Love always,
Robin

m said...

@Robin Wow! Thanks :-) I'll have to put that up in my office.

@anonymous post on 1/11/11 I found out that that error comes up when the boot usb disk does not recognize the disks in the order i "assumed" they would be in. I have put updated step by step instructions here:
http://tinyempire.com/notes/ntldrmoreinfo/usbscreenshots

Anonymous said...

Thankyou. It took me about half an hour to do. Very well explained, and I think it's great that you've put this advice up. You're a good person for doing that. Thankyou.

Great job man! Worked for me with the second solution, and with the usb boot. I will donate, you deserve it! Just out of curiosity, what is the 2nd solution actually? what was my problem?

Unknown said...

Man, you deserve the donation. You fixed my computer. Thanks a lot.

Computer wouldn't boot, black screen with blinking white cursor. FixNTLDR got me in, Combofix and Malware Bytes got rid of fake WindowsRepair, then used WXP CD, in Repair modeto do FIXMBR and FIXBOOT.

Anonymous said...

Thank you for your fix for this problem. It came as a result of a failed backup using Macrium Reflect that corrupted the MBR. Excellent! :)
